This Day in D.C. Baseball History – July 7, 1937

President Franklin D. Roosevelt becomes the first President to attend an All-Star game as he throws out the first pitch at Griffith Stadium in Washington D.C. The 31,391 fans in attendance at the 5th All-Star game saw Yankees’ first baseman Lou Gehrig drive in four runs with a home run and a double to lead the AL to an 8-3 victory over the National League.

Dizzy Dean is not only the losing pitcher of the game he gets his toe fractured as Earl Averill lines a shot at Dean. After that injury Dizzy will end up changing his pitching delivery. The change in his delivery will lead to a very bad arm injury.
