This Day in D.C. Baseball History – Soriano becomes the 4th player to join 40/40 Club

September 16, 2006

Alfonso Soriano becomes the fourth player to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a season when he steals his 40th base in the first inning of a game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers.

Before the 2006 season came to an end Soriano starts his own club as he becomes the only player in Major League Baseball history to hit 40 home runs, steal 40 bases, hit 40 doubles and have 20 assist from the outfield in one season.

40/40 Club

Jose Canseco – 1988

Barry Bonds – 1996

Alex Rodriguez – 1998

Even though he only played one season with the Nats he left his mark on the Washington’s All Time Single-Season Leaders list. His 46 home runs rank 2nd all time to Frank “Hondo” Howard’s 48 home runs that he hit in 1969. He also had more total bases “362” in 2006 than any player to ever play for Washington major league team.  Since the 2006 season Soriano’s all of his batting numbers have declined every season.
