The 1948 Project – 3 August 1948 Whisper’s from Washington

On August 3, the Indians were one game behind the Athletics. Lou Boudreau started Satchel Paige against the Washington Senators in Cleveland. The 72,562 people that saw the game set a new attendance record for a major league night game. Paige showed his nervousness as he walked two of the first three batters and then gave up a triple to Bud Stewart to fall behind 2-0. The ball went through the legs of a startled Satchel Paige. By the seventh, the Indians were up 4-2 and held on to give Paige his second victory

Player Profile – Ed “Bud” Stewart

Stewart arrived in Washington in May after a trade that sent Leon Culberson to New York in exchange for Bud and cash. Bud has the reputation a stellar defensive outfielder and a dependable pinch hitter. He also gives the team some much needed speed and returns to the majors after a six year absence.

Stewart is a rarity for Washington, a team that seems to rely on Southerners, Bud hails from California. His road to the majors is unique. A California native he first played professional ball with San Diego in the Pacific Coast League. He was drafted by the Pirates in 1940 and broke in with them in 1941, he batted .267 in 73 games. Batting just .219 in 1942, he later blamed Pirate manager Frankie Frisch’s for his poor play. He retired from the game and then spent time in the military. He was back in the game with the Hollywood Stars in 1945 and 1946. In 1947 he batted .358 for Kansas City in the American Association, and then signed with the Yankees. Did you know? He has a degree in physical education from UCLA.
