James Edward (Red) Bird B Apr. 25, 1890 D Mar. 23, 1972

One Game Wonder Red Bird had his cup of coffee with the Senators on September 17th of 1921. His official line lists him as having pitched 5 innings, giving up 3 runs (all earned) with 1 walk, 2 strike outs and 1 hit batter and no decision. Bird would depart with a 5.40 ERA.

Roberto (Bobby) Estalella B Apr. 25, 1911 D Jan. 6, 1991

Outfielder* Bobby Estalella joins the list of the “Fab Fourteen”, one of 14 players who spent time with the Philadelphia Athletics, St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators.

Also a member of the frequently mentioned Cuban Connection, Estalella would first appear in the major leagues in September of 1935 with the Senators. Estalella would hit .314 in 15 games for Washington. He’d only appear in 13 games with the Senators in 1936 and then would disappear from the major league scene until 1939 when he’d be back in Washington, appearing in 82 games.

Out of the major leagues again in 1940, Estalella would return for 46 games for the St. Louis Browns in 1941.

Near the end of the 1941 season, Estalella would be headed back to Washington, traded for George Archie.

Back in Washington, Estalella would have one of his most active seasons in 1942, hitting .277 in 133 games.

Before the start of the 1943 season Estalella was traded again, this time to the Philadelphia Athletics for Bob Johnson.

Estalella would spend 1943 through 1945 with the A’s, hitting .298 in 140 games in 1944 and .299 in 126 games in 1945.

Jumping to the Mexican League, Estalella would rejoin the Philadelphia A’s in 1949, appearing in 8 games, his last game in the majors coming in mid-September.
