Nats pull off Triple Steal

May 12, 1927 — In the third inning of an eventual loss to the White Sox at Comiskey WashingtonSenators1227Park, Washington’s Tris Speaker, Sam West and Joe Judge pulled off one of baseball’s rarities — a triple steal. Speaker, taking advantage of Chicago right-hander Ted Blankenship‘s deliberate windup, broke from third base and easily beat Blankenship’s toss to the plate. West advanced to third base and Judge pulled into second on the play. In the top of the first inning, Judge had given the Nationals an early lead with a three-run home run into the right field seats. Speaker’s daring dash gave the Nats a 4-1 lead, but Blankenship shut the door, while the White Sox pecked away at Washington starter Fred Marberry and posted a 5-4 win.
