Last night the 44,000 fans at Nationals Park witnessed a similar outcome to a must win baseball game as 34,000 Washington fans witnessed eighty eight years and two days earlier.
On October 9, 1924 the New York Giants held a three games to two lead over the Washington Senators. Game six was played at Griffith Stadium in Washington D.C. The Washington ball club found themselves in a must win situation.
The New York Giants started Art Nehf against the Washington Senators’ Tom Zachary.
The Giants’ Ross Youngs gave the Giants a 1-0 lead when he scores on George Kelly’s two out single in the top of the first inning. The Giants hang onto the 1-0 lead through the first four innings of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth inning the Washington Senators’ Roger Peckinpaugh leads off with a single to left field. Muddy Ruel puts down a sacrifice bunt that gets Pechinpaugh to second base. Peckinpaugh reaches third base when Tom Zachary grounds out to first baseman George Kelly. McNeely gets to first base on a walk and then he steals second base with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The next batter, Bucky Harris, comes up with a clutch single to right field and Peckinpaugh and McNeely score for the Senators. Art Nehf strikeouts the Senators’ Sam Rice for the third out, the Senators lead 2-1 after five innings.
The Giants are only able to get two singles during the next four innings and do not score anymore run’s. The Washington Senators hold on to win the game 2-1. The victory ties the series at 3-3.
To make a long story short on October 10, 1924 at Griffith stadium the Senators will go on to beat the Giants in game seven by the score of 4-3.
