This Day in Washington Nationals History – Brandon Watson hits home run in major league debut

August 9

2005 – Brandon Watson, making his major league debut, hit a solo home run in the fourth inning gave the Nationals 5-1 lead. Fellow Nats’ Brad Wilkerson, Brian Schneider and Vinny Castilla also homered as the Nationals held off the Houston Astros to take 6-5 win.

The win snapped a 13-game losing streak in one-run games.

2009Washington Nationals (40-72) won their eighth straight game 9-2 over the Arizona Diamondbacks (50-62). The Nationals are enjoying their second longest win streak in their five seasons in the nation’s capital. They won 10 straight from June 2-12, 2005.

Adam Dunn had a two-run home run, his 30th. This is Dunn’s sixth straight seasons of hitting 30 or more home runs. Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and three runs, and Elijah Dukes drove in three.

The Nats’ 26-year-old starter J.D. Martin got his first win and first hit of his major league career. Martin (1-2) became the fifth Nationals pitcher to record their first win as a starter this season at this point in the 2009 season.

2011 – Transactions – San Diego Padres sold Miguel Perez to Washington Nationals.

2012Michael Morse, homered twice, Zimmermann matched his career high with 11 strikeouts and the Washington Nationals (69-43) completed a four-game sweep of the Houston Astros (36-77) with a 5-0 victory.
