This little tale was printed in 1899. Dummy Hoy had been feuding with Tommy Tucker. Tucker was boisterous and known for his antics.
Tommy Tucker and Billy Hoy of the Louisville’s are not on the best of terms, though the enmity that existed a year ago is no longer as bitter. One night last year Hoy supplied himself with a large six shooter and went gunning for Tucker as a result of an argument they had during the game in the afternoon. It seems that Tucker worked his old trick of sitting down on Hoy when he tried to get back to first base. The dummy went into a rage, and though he cannot talk plainly, he gave Tucker to understand what he thought of him in a manner that did not please the big first baseman, who said a few unkind things back to Hoy, who understood all by watching the movements of his lips. That night Hoy came down to, the hotel with a large gun in his pocket looking for Tucker. The mute was not be trifled with, and some of the St. Louis players wisely kept Tucker out of sight. When the story was told last night; Tucker jokingly remarked: “Quite a change had come ever Hoy since he has been married. He is so much more quiet,” Cincinnati Tribune.
