The Washington Nationals, the newest baseball franchise in D.C. ended a five game losing streak by beating the St. Louis Cardinals 3 to 2. This one run victory would be the beginning of a five and a half week span that was one of the most enjoyable times in D.C. baseball history.
The Nationals will surprise most of the baseball world by winning 27 of their next 34 games from May 29, 2005 to July 5, 2005. The team went from 4th place and 3.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East to 1st place and 4.5 games ahead of the 2nd place Braves.

On June 5, 2005 the Nationals took over 1st place in the National League East. This was the first time since 1933 a Major League team from Washington was in 1st place this late into the season. With the team playing so well the fans poured into RFK stadium. It only took thirty two home games for the team to draw 1,056,642 fans and to set the new record that surpassed the old record of 1,027,216 that was set in 1946.
