2005 – The Washington Nationals (70-66) beat the Philadelphia Phillies (73-63) 5-4 when Preston Wilson dropped a seeing fly ball into right field to score Jose Guillen with the winning run.
2006 – The Washington Nationals (59-77) keep rallying in the late innings. Austin Kearns hit a two-run double in a four-run eighth inning, and the Nationals beat Arizona (64-72) 5-3 for their fourth consecutive come-from-behind victory.
The Nats have won their last four games after trailing by at least two runs in the eighth inning or later in each game. According to Elias Sports Bureau, that’s the longest winning streak of its kind in major-league history.
2007 – Jason Bergmann struck out nine in leading the Washington Nationals (61-77) to a 6-3 win over the Florida Marlins (60-78). Wily Mo Pena homered, and Austin Kearns went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Nationals, who moved one game ahead of Florida at the bottom of the NL East standings.
2008 – Cristian Guzman set a franchise season record with his eighth consecutive multi-hit game. In his last at bat he hit bases-clearing double in the decisive eighth inning. The Washington Nationals (54-86) went on to beat the Philadelphia Phillies (76-64) 9-7. The loss put the Phillies three games behind the division leading New York Mets.
2011 – Ryan Zimmerman broken-bat fly ball with one out in the ninth dropped into right field for a single, driving in two runs and giving the Washington Nationals (64-73) a 8-7 victory over the New York Mets (67-70,).
2012 – The Washington Nationals 82-52) beat the Chicago Cubs (51-83) 2-1. The win was the Nats 82nd victory of the season and gave the team their first winning season since the team moved from Montreal.
2013 – Wilson Ramos hit a three-run homer and Corey Brown also went deep to back Gio Gonzalez, helping the Nationals (70-68) beat the Philadelphia Phillies (63-76) 9-6. FYI, Denard Span extended his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games.
Birthdays
Matthew Dicus Capps – September 3, 1983.
Matt Capps pitched 47 games and saved 27 games for the Nats and made the 2010 National League All-Star team. Capps pitched 1/3 and recorded the decision as the NL beat the AL 3-1. On July 29, 2010 the Nats traded Capps to Minnestoa for for Joe Testa (minors) and Wilson Ramos.
