DAY 1: ROY SIEVERS BEGINS HIS HISTORIC STREAK

Saturday, July 27, 1957- Roy Sievers, in the throes of his greatest career year, continued his march to capture the American League Home Run crown, battling both Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams into the last days of the 1957season.

After setting franchise home run records in 1954 (24), 1955 (25) and 1956 (29), Roy was determined to get more money out of tight fisted Calvin Griffith. Insisting that Roy’s average was a “paltry” .253, his RBI total was a “mere” 95, and he had not produced a single walk-off home run for all of 1956, Griffith only offered Roy a paltry $500 raise. “That made me mad,” Roy recalled, “but it also made me determined to do better so’s I could get better money the next year. Griffith was a tough old bastard to deal with.”

Roy had an unusually hot exhibition season, hitting homers off the Reds, the Dodgers and the White Sox. On March 30th, Roy would hit the Yankees for 2 doubles in their exhibition series.  Avoiding his traditional slow start to the season, Roy had ten hits in his first 30 at bats over a seven-game span and was hitting at a torrid .370 clip. “I just seem to feel better.” Roy said.

On Saturday afternoon, July 27, Roy would face the Athletics’ Tom Gorman in the second game of a 3-game set. Roy would take Gorman deep into the left field seats in the bottom of the 8th, bringing home roommate Jim Lemon to seal a 6-5 win for the Nats and hitting home run number 24 of his spectacular 42 home run season.

From July 27th through August 3rd, Roy would hit 7 home runs in 8 days and 6 homers in 6 straight days to tie a then A. L. record shared by Ken Williams of the 1922 Cubs and Lou Gehrig of the 1931 Yankees.

That shot would tie his 1954 franchise home run mark at 24.
