DAY 5: THE SIEVERS STREAK

Thursday, August 1, 1957- As the temperature rose in Washington D. C., so also did

Roy Sievers

Roy Sievers’ batting average.  Jack Harsham would become the next unwilling victim to Roy’s lethal bat. In the bottom of the 6th inning, with outfield mate Jim Lemon on base, Roy would take Harsham’s best fast ball deep into straightaway center field to give the Senators a lead that would turn into a 5-4 win against the Windy City Sox. This would be Roy’s 28th homer for the year, setting a torrid pace for himself, as well as big hitters Mickey Mantle and Ted Willems, all vying for the elusive A. L. home run crown. The D. C. scribes are saying he looks like “that great rookie of 1949.”
