Wesley Cheek Ferrell B Feb. 2, 1908 D Dec. 9, 1976
Pitcher Wes Ferrell would have a rather inauspicious start in the majors, pitching in 1 inning for the Cleveland Indians in early September of 1927, giving up 2 walks, 3 hits and 3 runs, finishing the season with a 27.00 ERA.
Back briefly with the Indians in 1928, Ferrell would appear in 2 games and be charged with the loss in both, however he’d lower his ERA to a much more respectable 2.25.
Ferrell would finally get the chance to pitch regularly in 1929 and would make the most of it, winning 21 or more games each season from 1929 through 1932, his best mark coming in 1930 when he’d win 25, leading the American League in wins.
Ferrell would stumble a bit in 1933, his record dropping to 11-12, although he’d be named to the AL All Star Team.
Traded to the Boston Red Sox, Ferrell would play for Boston from 1934 through June of 1937 when he’d be on the move again, this time along with brother Rick and Mel Almada to the Washington Senators in exchange for Ben Chapman and the well-travelled Bobo Newsom.
Ferrell would post an 11-13 record with the Senators pitching in 25 games and would make his second All Star game appearance in 1937.
Starting the 1938 season with Washington, Ferrell would have a 13-8 record with a 5.92 ERA when he was released by the Senators in mid-August. Two days later he’d be signed by the New York Yankees where he’d finish the 1938 season.
Ferrell would be gin the 1939 season with the Yankees but would be released in late May after posting a 1-2 record with a 4.66 ERA. He’d make brief appearances with the 1940 Brooklyn Dodgers and the 1941 Boston Braves, playing in his final major league game in early May of 1941.
Dale Dudley Gear B Feb. 2, 1872 D Sep. 23, 1951
Dale Gear began his short major league career in mid-August of 1896, appearing in 4 games for the Cleveland Spiders. Pitching in 3 of those games, he’d post an 0-2 record and would play in 1 game at 1st base.
Gear would play in another 6 games for the Spiders in 1897, all as an out fielder.
Gear wouldn’t see major league action again until 1901 when he’d show up on the roster of the Washington Senators in the inaugural season of the newly formed American League. Gear would pitch in 24 games, posting a 4-11 record and would also play another 35 games in the outfield where he’d hit .236, his last game coming in late September.
Wallace Walter (Cy) Warmoth B Feb. 2, 1893 D Jun. 20, 1957
Cy Warmoth first showed up in the majors briefly with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1916. Appearing in 3 games, pitching in 5 innings, Warmoth would leave with a 14.40 ERA.
Not seen again at the major league level until 1922, Warmoth would pitch in 5 games for the Senators, going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA. Returning with Washington in 1923, Warmoth would post a 7-5 record in 21 games, his ERA rising to 4.29. He’d make his last major league appearance in early October.
