From 1939 to 1945 the Homestead Grays played a lot of their home game at Griffith Stadium when the Washington Senators were out of town. The Grays drew some very large crowds when the team played at Griffith Stadium. The local fans wanted to see the Grays’ exciting brand of baseball. With stars like Josh Gibson, Jamie “Cool Papa” Bell, Judy Johnson, Buck Leonard, Martin Dihigo and Joe “Smokey” Williams it is not surprising the team won nine “1937-1945” consecutive Negro League Pennants.
During World War II the Washington Senators and the Homestead Grays gave Washingtonians something to do to take their mind off the war. To remember the Homestead Grays on this Veterans Day I want to share this video titled Homestead Grays: Gone But Not Forgotten.
