Washington was arrested after picking up a foul ball that flew over the grandstand at American League Park and onto Trinidad Avenue. Clarke, described by the Washington Post as weighing over 200 pounds, retrieved the ball and ran to “I” Street, turned west onto 13th Street and ran toward his home on “H” Street. He was apprehended by Special Officer James O’Dea, who had started pursuit on foot, along with a Bicycle Officer whose name was Johnston. Both officers were wearing civilian clothes. Clarke was charged with petit larceny and assault on Officer O’Dea.
