At Cleveland‚ the Washington Senators are leading the Indians 11-4 after five innings. Washington‘s Goose Goslin‚ who has knocked in 3 runs on a double and a home run faces the Indians’ reliever Bert Cole. Cole’s first pitch sailed inside near Goslin’s head.
As the story goes, Goslin with a raised bat in his hand as he goes towards the pitcher’s mound. Umpire Tommy Connolly grabs Goslin and stops him before he gets to Cole.
After a long at bat Goslin ends up hitting a grounder to the first baseman George Burns who tossed the ball to Cole at first. Goslin does not hesitate as he runs over Cole. Bert Cole gets up to retaliate against Goslin when the two players are separated by umpire Billy Evans. Both benches clear and the umpires have to take a few minutes to get everyone off the field. When it was all over Goslin gets ejected from the game.
While the Goose is heading towards the dugout he is greeted by dozens of pop bottles from the upset and restless Indian fans. Eventually the police were able to get the crowd to calm down later the police escorted Goose Goslin from the park.
The Senators showed the Indians no mercy during rest of the game as they piled on another eight runs and beat the home team 19-6. The win ties the Senators with the Philadelphia Athletics for first place in the American League.
